Daitōryū Aiki-jūjutsu (大東流合氣柔術 in short: Daitōryū) is a 1200 year old Samurai martial art, is considered one of the oldest and noblest schools for martial arts in Japan and is a national cultural asset. Daitōryū is a traditional Japanese martial art, which was founded in 1087 by Shinra Saburō Minamoto no Yoshimitsu (新羅 三郎 源 義光, (1056-1127), samurai of the Minamoto clan, third son of Yoriyoshi Minamoto, de-scendant of the fifth generation of the emperor of Japan, the Minamoto dy-nasty Fujiwara Seiwa. The fighting system, named after Yoshi-mitsu's residence, later became known as Daitōryū. This art was ostensibly trained over several centuries within the Takeda branch of the Minamoto lineage as a family secret. At the end of the 19th century, Daitōryū was first publicly taught by Takeda Sōkaku.
Daitōryū Aiki-jūjutsu 大 東 (Daito = residence) 流 (ryu = school) 合 (Aiki = harmony) 氣 (ki = breath, energy), 柔 術 (Jujutsu = gentle art) is a form of Jujutsu. It includes techniques of close combat like: Atemi-Waza (punch and kick techniques), Shime-Waza (throttling, strangulation techni-ques), Kansetsu-Waza (techniques of joint locking), Osae-Waza (grappling techniques), Nage-Waza (grappling techni-ques). Waza (throwing or throwing an opponent on the floor), Aikinojutsu (throwing an opponent on the floor with Aiki), Kyushuwaza (pressure on vital points of the human body). A practitioner studies the use of some of the ancient weapons of Bushi (such as Katana, Bo, etc.). The many techniques of Aikijujutsu are transferred and catalogued in scrolls (densho), which in this case of Hiden Mokuroku are divided into a series (kajo) with increasing difficulty of execution.
Daitōryū Aiki-jūjutsu is a traditional Japanese martial art that has been passed down from generation to generation within the Takeda family of the Aizu domain and was first presented to the public by Takeda Sokaku at about the end of the 19th century. Daitōryū Aiki-jūjutsu today is a cul-tural heritage of the Japanese warrior cas-te with a long history and tradition. It was developed as a means of self-defense against unprovoked violence, with the ultimate goal of eliminating violence rather than causing it. This is one of the reasons why Daitōryū relies on forms (kata) and their practice, but does not involve any kind of competition. Moreover, as a classical Japanese martial art, Daitōryū means more than just pure self-defense: it offers a way to tame your body and mind with the intention of developing your personal character and contributing to the broader social prosperity.

Sokaku TAKEDA 武田惣角 (1859-1943)
who dedicated his life to the dissemination of martial arts, especially through the Daitōryū Aiki-Jūjutsu. He was born on October 10, 1859 in the city of Aizu Sakashita, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, and was trained by his father Sokichi Takeda in his youth. Later he was trained in Oshiki Uchi (secret techniques of the Aizu Clan) at Saigō Tanomo (Chikamasa) from 1875 to 1898. At the request of the latter he opened the teachings of the techniques of the Aizu-Clan to other people. Sokaku Takeda traveled throughout Japan. To name his art, he used the name Daito, which was the name of the castle of the founder of the Aizu Clan. According to a student list compiled by Sokaku Takeda, he had about 30,000 students and trained about thirty teachers (Kyoju Dairi).
36th Generation SHOBUKAN
Toshimi MATSUDA 松田敏美 (1895-?)
He received the Kyoju Dari Teacher Certificate from Sensei Sokaku TAKEDA in August 1929. Sokaku Takeda had trained many students. Among his students was also Toshimi (Hosaku) Matsuda. Toshimi (Hosaku) Matsuda was the first and most important Daito-Ryu master of Yoshiji Okuyama (1901-1987). Afterwards Yoshiji Okuyama became a direct disciple of Sokaku Takeda for a short time. This is important because later Okuyama developed his own ryu/ha (styles/methods) from Daito-Ryu and from this the art of Hakko-Ryu Ju-Jutsu developed.
37th Generation RENSHINKAN
Takeshi MAEDA 前田武
(1907 - 2001)
He inherited the Kyoju Dari teacher certificate from his teacher Toshimi MATSUDA. Matsuda Sensei had the opportunity to visit Tokyo frequently because of his work, so he took advantage of this circumstance to announce Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu's lectures in a certain local newspaper. One of the participants in the announcement was Takeshi Maeda 前田武 , a pharmacist by profession, who decided to visit Matsuda in his hostel in Asakusa. Maeda, who had practiced Kodokan Judo but had no experience in Koryu, delighted by Matsuda's techniques, asked him to accept him as a formal student. From that moment on, whenever Matsuda moved to the capital, Maeda went to receive private instruction. Moreover, thanks to his profession, Maeda was able to go to the Shobukan Dojo in Asahikawa. In this way, Maeda was learning Daito-ryu with Matsuda, both in Asakusa and Asahikawa. It must be said that until the late 1920s, the Daito-ryu was not formally and extensively studied in a dojo, but the entire study was conducted in seminars and private lessons. The forms of Daito-ryu that Matsuda taught in Maeda were very similar to those taught by Takeda to his other students. At the end of the war, Maeda finally settled in his hometown, Omama, Gunma Prefecture, and opened the Renshinkan Dojo (練 心 館 道場) where Daito-ryu teaches. During this period, Maeda teaches seminars in Nagano, Gunma and Tochigi prefectures, arriving to give a demonstration of Daito-ryu to Japan's self-defense forces (自衛隊, Jieitai) in Gunma in 1963.
38th Generation RENSHINKAN
Michio TAKASE 高瀬道雄
(1964)
Today, after the death of Maeda Sensei in 2001, it is Michio Takase Shihan who keeps the traditions of the Renshinkan Dojo in Japan alive. In 1997 he was promoted to director by his teacher Takeshi Maeda and since then he teaches Toshimi Matsuda Den Daitōryū Renshinkan in the prefec-tures of Gunma, Tochigi and Saitama. Takase Sensei is the owner of all Daitōryū documents that Maeda Sensei has kept. These documents were inherited by Takeda Sensei to Matsuda Sensei, from there to Maeda Sensei, who now passed them on to the present nephew and guardian Michio Takase Sensei.
